The individual stories that take place in diverse locations and eras describe the influence of several manipulating, female demons on their chosen human prey.

A Sukkubus (or Succubus) is a term for a mythological female demon who gets her nourishment from sleeping people. The equivalent term for a male demon is Inkubus (or Incubus).
