The series premiered in 1924. Stopped in
1988.
The series' starring character is
named Washington Tubbs II, and he is a small, curlyheaded and
girl-crazy guy, who started working in a grocery store as a
clerk, but soon he found himself hurled into numerous
adventures, some of which were marrying a Polynesian princess,
joining a Wild West show, fighting Mexican bandits, and finding
a huge treasure.
The series had several contemporary sidekicks, but one of them
stayed on; it was Captain Easy, who started out as an army
officer in 1929. As time went by Easy took over the panels more
and more, while Tubbs slowly retreated to a quiet life as a
private detective, husband, and father. After World War II the
tables had turned; Easy was now the starring character, while
Tubbs was the occasional sidekick.
The initial title of the series was Washington
Tubbs II, but this was changed two years later. In 1949 the
series was official named Captain Easy, but many newspapers kept
the old title, which is also still the most common among readers
even today.
