The series premiered in
1940.
The title characters are brothers
living together in a brick house in the deep woods. They are
Practical Pig, who is serious and hardworking, and the
thoughtless happy-go-lucky Fifer and Fiddler whose names refer
to their interests in playing music.
The brothers are eternally stalked by Big Bad Wolf, who longs to
eat them for dinner, but his dastardly efforts are countered by
his righteous son Li'l Bad Wolf (and sometimes by Brer
Bear). They manage to thwart Big Bad Wolf's endless hunting
schemes.
The stories were/are written by an
overwhelming number of artists. Examples: Carl von Buettner
(1905-1965), Carl Robert Fallberg (1915-1996), Jim Kenner
(ca.1920-), Jan Kruse (1946-), Evert Geradts (1943-), Joel Katz
(1945-).
