The series premiered in 1958. Stopped in 1981.

The series started as a humorous and satirical strip with dramatic tales from the Wild West and with gentle pokes at B-film westerns. The stories take place in the 1870s in the small prairie town Conniption, in which a young Rick O'Shay is the deputy sheriff. The stories involve a gallery of interesting persons living in the town, of which one of O'Shay's friends, the usually law-abiding gunslinger Hipshot Percussion, is the most often recurring.

Following numerous reruns the strip was in 1992 retitled The New Adventures of Rick O'Shay and Hipshot.
Although onomatopoeically alike the series must not be confused with Richochet.
