The dog Rantanplan comes from the Lucky Luke series, where he (dis)functions as a nuisance to all his surroundings, because of his horrendous stupidity, that often causes mishap and mayhem.
The dog was such a success that he eventually acquired his own series, in which nothing much from his role in the overall story plots from Lucky Luke is changed; he is still 'more stupid than his own shadow', he serves as a guard dog in a prison, he sleeps most of his day away - and he definitely has no clue whatsoever of the goings-on around him...

The name - and the whole character - of Rantanplan is a parody on the intelligent American police dog series Rin Tin Tin.
