The series premiered in 1907. Stopped in
1982*.
Initially, the two title characters from this newspaper strip
series formed a strange partnership as they had only one thing
in common - their devotion to gambling on horses. Augustus Mutt is
tall and dimwitted, while Jeff is small and asylum-prone. At
times he saw himself as a great boxing prizefighter!
Later on, their interest turned to more general aspects of
trying to get rich without too much effort, and Jeff mostly
tried to keep up with Mutt's increasingly more desperate
schemes.
The
initial title of the series was Mr. A. Mutt, but the
following year Jeff was added, which caused the retitling to
Mutt and Jeff.
* The
series was also published as comic books from 1932 to 1982.
Smith drew the stories until 1980, when Breisacher took over.
