The series premiered in 1997. Stopped in
2010.
The major part of the series takes place in ancient
Rome under the reign of Emperor Nero (full name Nero Claudius
Caesar Augustus Germanicus). He starts out as a worthy person,
but as time goes by he slowly ascends into increasing madness
that eventually consumes him. The title character, Lucius
Murena, is merely playing second fiddle in the series, as we
sporadically follow his life that is partly entwined with that of
Nero's.
The very realistic series attempts to be historically correct,
and it is based on the newest research of the chaotic time
period.
