The series premiered in
1958. Stopped in 1985.
The main character called
Le Vieux Nick is a sailor living about 500 years
ago. He mostly uses trickery in order to
neutralize the job's numerous privateers and
pirates on the high seas, and at one point he
encounters the savage pirate Barbe-Noir, who
slowly becomes the star alongside Nick, although
the two adversaries are sworn enemies. To soften
up Barbe-Noir's dark side a bit, he tends to
appear more ridiculous than dangerous, which also
contributed to his increasing popularity with the
readers.
Initially, the series was titled Le
Vieux Nick, but later it was altered to Le
Vieux Nick et Barbe-Noir (The Old Nick and
Blackbeard in English).
