The series takes place in European medieval times, where the boy Johan is a page to the king. Later he meets the dwarf Pirlouit and they become friends with the latter serving as Johan's esquire. Their joint adventures tend to be rather action-filled permeated by slapstick situations.
In an album from 1958 Peyo introduced his next success, Les Schtroumpfs, in which the two characters meet the tiny blue beings. They were later guest starring in some of the following albums.

* The year of the first album. The series actually began under the title Johan featuring only one of the main characters in 1947, and in 1954 the series changed title to Johan et Pirlouit.
