The series, a trilogy, is based on the treasured Danish poet Jeppe Aakjær's novel of a poor peasant known as Jens Langkniv (Jens Longknife in English), who, during the European 30-year war that lasted from 1618 to 1648, is forced to live a life as a robber in order to survive the harsh times, when German mercenaries ravage the peninsula of Jutland. Then he decides to stand up against the oppressors and become a freedom fighter.
