The series premiered in
1988. Stopped in 1993.
The series is based on the treasured
Danish author Carit Etlar's novels describing a
historical freedom fighter during Sweden's
occupation of Denmark in the middle of the 17th
century.
He was born Svend Poulsen Gønge but he became
known as Gøngehøvdingen (meaning Chief of the
Gøings (Gøinge was a landscape in the Danish
part of what is now Sweden)). Poulsen fought the
occupation forces in Denmark most of his life,
but he earned his merits from 1657 to 1660 when
the Swedish king tried to conquer the Danish
capital København (Copenhagen).
The series foremost describes the righteous
Poulsen, his first lieutenant Ib Abelsøn, and
his men's numerous heroic skirmishes with the
marauding Swedish army in locations near the
capital.
