The series is based on a real person by the name of Orvon Grover Autry, who was a performer in film, television, and song. The comic series focuses on his adventures as a righteous and brave cowboy in the Old West.

The series is a spinoff from films (1934-1953) and a TV series (1950-1956).

* The full title of the series is Gene Autry Comics. A shortlived forerunner was publishing by Dell in 1942.
