The series contains humourous science fiction stories from the 30th Century primarily featuring the vast crew of the starship Planet Express. A few of the most often recurring characters are the one-eyed captain Turanga Leela, the delivery boy Philip J. Fry, and the egocentric robot Bender Bending Rodriguez.

The series is based on the American science fiction sitcom titled Futurama that aired from 1999 to 2003 (140 episodes).
