The series premiered in 1963.

Fred is a bassett hound owned by a nameless, middle-aged couple. Fred is spending the time commenting (in thoughts) on the day's events and occurrences. The opinions are philosophical, piercing, and surprising, and they are delivered in panels, where nothing much is going on, which in turn contributes to the series' laid-back atmosphere.

Initially, the series was subtitled 'The Hound that's almost Human'.
