MAIN STORY
The series premiered in 1948. Stopped in 1961.

For 13 years Nielsen wrote and drew a series that was, in reality, one long epic story starring a great number of diverse characters with young Eg as the only one to stay for the duration (Eg means Oak in English and the series' title Egene means The Oaks). The longrunning epos spans over a lot of historically plausible locations (in Denmark and abroad), and it even spans over a few historical ages; when Eg leaves Denmark to travel south he moves from the Bronze Age, and when he returns after lenghty visits to the Roman and Greek cultures, Denmark has entered the Iron Age.
The story is remarkable in a number of ways; it gives a fine rendering of life as it unfolded back then, and you are introduced to a great variety of interesting 'passers-by' just as you would if you were travelling. Moreover all texts and dialogue are placed below the panels so as not to disturb the often poetic atmosphere. The series has often been compared with Hal Foster's Prince Valiant for the above reasons, although it is not as violent.
