The character of Colonel Pottersby is a whimsical elderly gentleman dressed in coat-and-tails and a top hat. Seemingly he spends his time trying to court a spinsterish lady identified as Duchess - maybe a genuine title or maybe just an affectionate nickname - but she is equally determined to foil Pottersby's never-ending advances.

The full title of the series is Colonel Pottersby and the Duchess.
