Blondie was originally based on a gold-digging character named Blondie Boopadoop, and it was first later that the rich playboy Dagwood Bumstead came into her life. After their marriage the tables were turned; Blondie became a hard-working housewife, while Dagwood was disinherited and started working in an office. As years went by they started a family (Alexander and Cookie) who actually age through the series while no one else does!
From the day Dagwood entered the series he took over the starring role, and we follow his daily tiffs with the family, his next-door neighbour Woodley, the mailman, door-to-door salesmen, and his employer Dithers.
The series carries a variety of running gags. The best known are Dagwood's impressive creativity in composing towering sandwiches, and his frequent 'run-ins' (literally!) with the mailman when he jets out of the house in the mornings.
