Personal dates: Founded in 1934 by Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson (1890-1968) as National Allied Publications, but the name changed in 1937 to Detective Comics (later shortened to DC). Stopped in 2011.

MAIN STORY

The series premiered in 1957*. Stopped in 1968* after 136 issues.

The series describes a freelance group of air fighter pilots based on Blackhawk Island. They battle any non-democratic villains they come up against ranging from Nazis to communists to terrorists. In this the second run, though, the focus is partly on mad scientists, aliens, and monsters. The group's leader is Bart Hawk AKA Blackhawk.

* Initially, the series started in Military Comics in 1941, and it has been revived several times since then.
