The plots always start in a small Gaul village during the occupation from the Roman empire some two thousand years ago. The villagers have never surrendered to the Romans and a special power potion ensures that they never will.
The villagers are plentiful, easily recognizeable and with distinct features; from Asterix who is the cunning and adventurous hero to Assurancetourix, the official bard, who has never mastered even one correct note.
The stories are famous for their many puns which are mostly impossible to translate properly, and the creators have managed to sneak in a multitude of real persons in the stories, which greatly add to the overall amusement. Beside famous actors and other comic characters the creators themselves are also present from time to time!

The correct French title of the series is Astérix.
