The series has been said to stereotype British Northeners as some outsiders see them; a constantly unemployed and drinking husband living together with a hard-working wife who keeps things together. Smythe once claimed that he modelled the two characters after his own parents!
All the stories take place in what appears to be a mining town where Andy lives in a row house. His only outings are in the direction of his favourite pub.

Just as in the series Beetle Bailey we never get to see Capp's eyes.
